1. By Mechanical construction -4Stroke/2-Stroke
2. By type of Ignition –compression Ignition /Spark Ignition

COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINES:
1. Basically Diesel Engines
2. Use Diesel fuel
3. Combustion is initiated by heat, on its own

SPARK IGNITION ENGINES:
1. Basically Petrol Engines ,LPG Engines ,CNG Engines
2. Use Leaded or unleaded Petrol ,Alcohol ,LPG or CNG
3. Combustion is initiated by a spark from a spark plug
